Although cold weather itself doesn’t cause sickness, it can weaken our immune system, making us more susceptible to viruses. Fortunately, nature provides an arsenal of remedies that can help us stay healthy and recover faster when we do get sick. In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of elderberries, the use of hyssop tonics, and other foods and strategies to support your wellness through winter.

My Elderberry Syrup Recipe


Making your own elderberry syrup at home is easy, cost-effective, and allows you to control the quality of ingredients.


(Make sure to boil the elderberry and not consume without boiling as elderberry contains cyanide and will make you sick)


Ingredients:


1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh)


4 cups water


1 cinnamon stick


1 teaspoon ground ginger


5 whole cloves


1 cup raw honey



Instructions:


1. Combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon stick, ginger, and cloves in a saucepan.



2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Let it cook for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.



3. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.



4. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing the berries to extract all the juice.



5. Once the liquid is lukewarm, add the honey and stir until fully dissolved.



6. Pour the syrup into a sterilized glass jar and refrigerate for up to two months.




I take a tablespoon of this syrup daily during flu season and increase to three times a day if I feel symptoms coming on.

Elderberry Tonic


When I need something even more potent, I turn to an elderberry tonic.


Ingredients:


1 cup elderberry syrup (recipe above)


½ cup fresh lemon juice


2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar


¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper



Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients in a jar and shake well. Drink a small shot (about 2–3 tablespoons) as needed for an immune boost. It’s zesty, tangy, and gives a fiery kick to fight off the germs.

Hyssop Tonics: A Lesser-Known Herbal Ally


Hyssop, a fragrant herb in the mint family, has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. Known for its antiviral and expectorant effects, hyssop is particularly useful for respiratory illnesses.
